| Excerpt from The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, November 2006. - Quote :
- Studies have shown that persons with a history of psychotic episodes, healthy people who have a high level of paranormal beliefs, and people who report mystical experiences all show increased right hemisphere brain activity centralized in the same areas. People who are more creative also show a similar pattern of brain activity. While this in no way suggests that paranormal, mystical or creative experiences are by themselves a symptom of mental illness, it is still not clear what makes some such experiences beneficial, while others lead to the impairment or distress of diagnosable mental pathology.
It is the purpose of the Rascombe Institute for the Study of Paranormal Psychoses to investigate this link between psychotic tendencies and paranormal beliefs. Designed as the type of mental institution known as an "open unit," the Rascombe Institute provides care and therapy for its patients in the relaxation and seclusion of the Canadian Rockies. Specializing in young people with psychotic disorders, the small institute provides a low-security environment and strives to make life as normal as possible for its charges while continuing treatment towards the ultimate goal of returning patients to their former lives. | |
